Birth: 19 FEB 1834 in Morgan co Ky/Morgan Co., KY

Death: 5 SEP 1926 in Kenova, W. Virginia

Burial: 7 SEP 1926 Lakeville, Ky. Capt. Powers Cemetery

Note: Joseph Dyer, was born the son of Francis and Jemima Dyer

in Morgan Co., Ky. . When he was born, Andrew Jackson was

President of the United States.. Joseph was 20 when he married

Lucretia Gullet. They were married June 16, 1854 by William

Coffee. They were married at the county court clerks' office

in West Liberty , Ky., Morgan Co., . When Joseph was 25 years

of age , in the Magoffin Co., census of 1860 it shows Joseph

to be a constable. He is living with his wife Lucretia

(Gullet) 21, they have one child Perlina, she is 3 years old.

Joseph was conscripted into the military , at that time you

either joined or was sent to prison , Josephs' enlistment was

for one year. He was a private in D Company of the 45th

Kentucky Mounted Infantry, he was inducted into service

                  October 28, 1863, at Covington , Ky. . The 45th Ky. Infantry

was under the command of Colonel John Mason Brown. In the

early part of 1864 the 45th was stationed at Mount Sterling,

this town served as a home base for picketing operations

against Confederate Cavalry units throughout the mountains. In

March of 1864 it's headquarters were moved to Flemings burg,

and then to Irvine , Ky. . In May of 1864 the 45th was placed

in Hobson Cavalry command and marched to Pound Gap on the

Virginia line. When Gen. John Hunt Morgan's Confederate

command moved into Ky. in June 1864 the 45th gave chase. The

regiment fought Morgan at MT. Sterling on June 9, 1864 , and

again at Cynthiana on June 12, 1864, where the Yankees

outnumbered Morgan over 4 to 1. Morgan's command was

scattered. In October 1864, the 45th was a part of the Union

command that moved on the Confederate salt works at Saltville,

Va. . On October 2, 1864, the 45th fought in the Battle of

Saltville where, again , the Union forces outnumbered their

Confederate opponents over 3 to 1 . This time the battle

resulted in a Confederate victory and the 45th fled back to

Kentucky. In November and December the 45th participated in

Stoneman's Raid into Southwest Virginia and fought in several

                  small skirmishes. Companies A, B, C, D, E, and F were mustered

out of service on December 24, 1864, at Catlettsburg, Ky. ,

while Companies G, H, I, and K were mustered out on February

14, 1865, after their 12 months term expired. During one of

these battles or skirmishes At Ivy Point (just outside of

Salyersville} , Joseph was captured, he was taken prisoner and

sent to Andersonville POW camp in Georgia. He was injured in

the right hip in the line of duty , this injury was very

disabling. He also spent time in a POW camp called Belle Isle,

this information was found in the Maggofin Co., records of

their Union soldiers. Joseph was discharged March 24, 1865 at

Covington , Ky. . His pension certificate number is

198972,which is recorded in Book D, page 611 in the pension

office. he received fifty dollars a month pension,. After the

war of the rebellion ,or Civil War as we know it . in the 1870

Magoffin Co., census, it shows Joseph 35 a farmer, wife

Lucretia Gullet, a daughter Perlina, 13 years old, a son

Evirt, age 10, a son Butler age 8, a daughter Nancy, age 3,

and a lady living in their household , , Nancy Gullet age 70

we assume this is the mother of Lucretia, Nancy Gullet was

born in Georgia. In the 1880 Maggoffin Co. census it shows

Joseph to be 46 and a farmer, wife Lucretia 42, Perlina age

24, Evirt age 20, Butler age 19,daughter Wesiah age 14,

Sheridan age 9, Mary age 7, and Seward age 4. In this census

there is no mention of the child Nancy or the motherinlaw

Nancy Gullet, we assume both are dead. Sheridan who is our

direct link to Joseph was born August 10, 1870. I found no

census for 1890 for Maggoffin Co., Ky. . In the 1900 Maggoffin

Co., Ky. census it shows Joseph Dyer age 66, Lucretia age 61,

Perlina age 43, and Seward age 23 in the household of Joseph

Dyer have been told that Perlina and Seward remained single

all their lives. Sometime between 1900 and 1908 Lucretia died.

Joseph remarried ,Mary Powers on April 1, 1908they were

married by Riley Howard in Maggoffin Co. . Joseph was 74 and

Mary was 22 years of age. In the 1910 Maggoffin Co. census it

shows Joseph 76 and his wife Mary 24 yeas of age. On the

seventh day of May 1920 Joseph Dyer age 86 is now a resident

of Kenova, Wayne county W. Virginia , , applied for a pension

of ninety dollars a month and was approved. Joseph received

this pension until his death on Sept. 5, 1926 in Kenova,

W.Virginia. The cause of death on his death certificate, heart

disease, general difficulty and a thrombosis . In a statement

that Mary made in a general affidavit for a widows pension on

the 24th of May 1927 in Kenova, W.Virginia., she states that

for the last three years of Josephs life , he was so disabled

that she had to dress and feed him like an infant, neighbors

and friends stated that she never left his side or was ever

relieved of his care. Mary did receive a widows pension of

twenty dollars per month, and she received this until her

death April 29, 1930. After Joseph died he was taken to

Maggoffin Co., Ky. and buried in the Captain Powers Cemetery,

later his wife Mary was buried beside him ,the Captain Powers

Cemetery is located on Lakeville Road, Rt. 7, about one mile

                  outside Salyersville, Ky. .
